Sci-Fi and Childlike UFO-Shaped Bean Pod in National Center for Traditional Arts, Yilan

Lin Shuen-Long and the DADA IDEA team launched “Flying with Bean-pod UFO” in October 2021, located by the Moon River in the National Center for Traditional Arts, Yilan. Made of local dried straw, the giant bean pod is made through the traditional handicrafts of local elders. The enchanting work is full of futuristic sci-fi imagination.
Lin describes the concept of the work, “Beans from Jack and the Beanstalk grow into an enormous beanstalk reaching up into outer space, and the bean pod is made into a Bean-pod UFO by extraterrestrials. The Bean-pod UFO returns to Earth and lands on a lawn in the National Center for Traditional Arts in Yilan. The drowsy Bean-pod UFO opens its lid to expose three beans floating inside its cabin, with a wide-open mouth welcoming earthmen to play inside.”
For Lin, Yilan with beautiful scenery and a clean environment is an ideal place for the UFO to land on Earth, and the UFO would be disguised as an agricultural product on the grass.
“As the night falls, the Bean-pod UFO sparkles attractively beneath the starry sky as if communicating with someone in outer space. Sitting inside the swaying cabin, visitors may enjoy

the soothing and heartily pleasure of wandering freely in the sky.

The 11-meter-long and 4-meter-high UFO-shaped bean pod was a joint effort with 18 seniors in Yilan County who excelled at straw weaving. Elders with a combined age of more than 1,000 years used harvested and dried straw as the material, using traditional manual techniques such as rubbing ropes and weaving brooms to bind nearly 500 bales of straw wrapped onto the giant steel structure, making an open pod that seems to smile. It also reveals three lovely bean seats, while its top is ingeniously equipped with three pairs of light-emitting antennas.
Lin Sheun-Long was impressed by the experience of combining exquisite traditional craftsmanship with contemporary art practice, “the work was made with the elders’ wisdom and rich experience. I saw the most precious and beautiful thing about Taiwanese people, that is their attentiveness.”
